I had to think hard about the rating for this short story. Was it worth a 4 or a 5? It held my attention to the end, but at times it felt like a filed report. There again, that is appropriate for the character of the ranger who rescued the dog. It is good writing, each word and sentence earning its place there, and on re-reading I noticed touches like `she has become my redemption there in the dark' followed in the next paragraph by the dog now being referred to as `my dog'. I appreciate subtlety in writing, and this is very subtle in the way it pulls you in without you noticing. It works precisely because it is written so dispassionately, the very factor I thought might mean me marking it down. Apart from anything else, I'm a sucker for a dog story with a happy ending.
The only thing I would suggest is to single space it. For those of us with hand problems and cheap version s, having to turn the page with the button twice as often as necessary is a pain.
This is a great read! A must read for all pet lovers! It is short, but sweet, yet a very good story.
I loved this! Gripping story, good grammar, and even free. Very short - what can you lose? Try this author. I am now looking for other works of hers, and enjoying her blog. So glad I downloaded this!
...and the main human character of this short story is a pushover for a dog needing rescued, even though it's late and she's had a bad week, and just wants to go home. When some college kids, who are in the park after closing, tell the park ranger that they happened on an injured dog, she knows she has to do something about it. So, she sets off into the dark determined to find and rescue the animal. A short animal story with a happy ending! Dog lovers should like this one!
